Zoom Lecture: Sketches from the Life of Johan Huizinga

CHV Member Laura Conley Shared Sketches of Her Father, One of the Most Famous Historians of the 20th Century

CHV member Laura Conley shared this very personal presentation on the fascinating life of her father, Johan Huizinga, Dutch historian, mentor to a future Queen and one-time hostage in Hitler's Gentlemen's Prison.

Huizinga lived from 1872 to 1945, and was Professor of History at Leiden University in The Netherlands.  He is generally considered to be one of the greatest historians of the 20th century and, more than 100 years after its first appearance, his best-known book, The Waning of the Middle Ages, is still read the world over.

In her talk, Laura included recollections of Huizinga's visit to the USA in the 1920's, as well as sketches of day-to-day existence during the war years, when her family was hiding refugees.

Forty-six members tuned into the Zoom session to share Laura's wonderful presentation.
