Gems of Domestic Architecture in Carnegie Hill

Architectural historian Sarah Coffin provided a virtual tour of neighborhood domestic gems we don’t always notice or appreciate.

CHV member Sarah Coffin, an architectural and decorative arts historian and long-time museum curator, guided us around our own neighborhood with an eye to helping us appreciate some of the architectural gems we live with every day, but don’t always notice or know much about.

This Zoom tour moved selectively uptown from 86th street to near the Historic District’s 98th street northern end, with the primary focus on buildings that are or were originally private houses. These gems, often designed by the most renown architects of their various eras, are located mostly on side streets in the lower and middle 90’s.

Later tours with Ms. Coffin will focus on the Carnegie family, their mansion and surrounding areas, as well as museums and mansions along Fifth Avenue.
