Women Artists of the Whitney, A Virtual Tour

A virtual tour of women artists in the collection of the Whitney Museum of American Art with long-time Docent Gail Casale.

Members enjoyed this very special presentation, in which CHV member Gail Casale, one of our favorite museum docents, presented a virtual tour of women artists in the collection of the Whitney Museum of American Art.

Gertrude Vanderbilt Whitney was born into the privileged life of one of the wealthiest families in America. In the early 1900’s she began collecting American art and made it her mission not only to collect, but to support, American artists, eventually opening the Whitney Museum. As a democratic collector, she supported artists and in particular gave a nod to women artists.

This tour focused on work from the Whitney’s permanent collection, from the 1930’s to the present, focused on some of the important pieces of art by women artists who challenged the norm, including Mrs. Whitney’s own life as a collector, patron, and well-recognized sculptor.
