Zoom Talk with Meredith Bergmann, Sculptor of Monumental Women

We were very fortunate to be able to hear a talk by Meredith Bergmann, the sculptor of Monumental Women, the sculpture recently erected in Central Park. She spoke about the creation of the monument, the history of the three women depicted and her other work.

We were very fortunate to be able to present, on Zoom, a conversation with Meredith Bergmann, the sculptor of Monumental Women which opened to great acclaim in Central Park this year.  Featuring Sojourner Truth, Elizabeth Cady Stanton and Susan B. Anthony this statue celebrates the 100th anniversary of women winning the right to vote.

For over 40 years Meredith Bergmann has been making sculpture that deals with complex themes in an accessible, beautiful and provocative way.  Working within the tradition of narrative sculpture, she draws on her love of history, of art,  literature and mythology to make the past speak to the present.  Blending the sensuality and power of representational sculpture with her own sense of mischief, brings multilayered responses.

Meredith spoke about the development of the monument, the histories of the women depicted and how the monument was actually created.  In response to a question she also told us about her other very interesting work, including the Boston Women's Memorial.
