Alzheimer's and Dementia Diseases -- Identification and Response
While dementia and Alzheimer’s Disease may be subjects none of us like to think about, a basic awareness is important in these times when so many we know are afflicted.
CHV was fortunate, indeed, to have Dr. Samuel Gandy, MD, PhD., provide us with a definition and overview of these diseases. His lecture, via Zoom, identifed their initial signs, but also provided useful advice to help individuals and families respond to the many demands of these illnesses, and the activities and resources that can support families and caregivers as they deal with their impact.
Dr. Gandy is Mount Sinai Professor of Alzheimer's Disease Research, Professor of Neurology and Psychiatry, Associate Director of the Mount Sinai Alzheimer's Disease Research Center in New York City, and Chairman Emeritus of the National Medical and Scientific Advisory Council of the Alzheimer's Association. He is an international expert in the metabolism of amyloid, the sticky substance that clogs the brain in patients with Alzheimer's.
