The Originality of Alexander Calder's Work
Please join us to hear Emily Folpe, an educator at The Museum of Modern Art for many years, share her insights over Zoom about the imagination and ingenuity of Alexander Calder's work. From his early wire and wood figures, jewelry, and mobiles in motion, to the monumental abstract sculptures of his later years, Calder developed a unique and creative artistic approach.
The son and grandson of sculptors, Alexander Calder re-imagined traditional sculpture as something else entirely - an experiment in space and motion. His invention of mobiles that move freely in air may be familiar to us now, but this new form of artistic expression upended the centuries-old notion that sculpture should be static and solid and grounded. While surveying the range of his work, Emily will note one of the most distinctive qualities of Calder’s art - its playfulness - delighting viewers for decades and making him one of the most beloved artists of the 20th century.
