Off the Easel: A Virtual Tour of Exterior Building Murals

John Priber and Gail Casale presented a fascinating virtual tour of East Harlem exterior building murals.

This Zoom session, with CHV member and New York architect John Priber and his wife Gail Casale, presented a virtual tour of exterior building murals, including the 100 Gates Project in East Harlem.

A runner and bicyclist for 40-years, John has turned his attention recently to photographing murals throughout the city while he exercises. The session focused on murals in East Harlem and their social, political and aesthetic importance.

While mural painting is a much revered, age-old artistic expression, these treasures are often hidden in plain sight. Contemporary murals on New York City buildings are mostly by anonymous artists, and, while they make an artistic statement, they often give voice to the surrounding community as well.

Gail Casale, a Whitney Museum docent and regular speaker for CHV, joined John for the presentation. Despie technical difficulties, the audience enjoyed John's wonderful shots of these intriguing street artworks, many just north of our neighborhood, along with Gail's commentary on who had executed them and how and why they were done. Many thanks to both John and Gail.
