Tour of Asian Galleries at Brooklyn Museum

Curator Joan Cummins will lead a tour of the newly opened Asian Galleries at the Brooklyn Museum.

In March 2020 curator Joan Cummins provided us with a tour of the newly opened galleries of Chinese, Japanese, and Korean art at the Brooklyn Museum.  Since that time, the museum has completed its suite of Asian Art galleries, adding spaces for Indian, Islamic, and Buddhist art. On Wednesday, October 4, Joan will take us through the new galleries, talking about masterworks from the Brooklyn collection and sharing insights into the work and planning required to create displays of ancient and historic artworks.

The tour will take place at 11am.  The group should gather in the lobby of the museum at the giant wood sculpture by the artist KAWS (it looks like two sad Mickey-Mouses). Joan will meet us there.  The museum does not open until 11am, but usually the guards let people come inside if they arrive a little bit early. Joan will provide admission to the museum, so do not buy tickets.  But this tour will fall under CHV’s new policy regarding payment of fees.  Since CHV will be making a contribution to the museum, a fee of $20 is being charged, which must be paid at the time of registration.  The tour will be limited to 15 people.  If you would like to attend, please register by clicking on the green REGISTER button below.

The easiest way to reach the museum is by subway: it is located at the Eastern Parkway / Brooklyn Museum station on the 2 and 3 subway line.  From Carnegie Hill, there are two routes.  Either will take at least 45 minutes, but Joan recommends budgeting an hour.  From the Lexington Avenue line (the easier route), take the 4 or 5 to Nevins Street in Brooklyn, and just walk across the platform to get the 2 or 3.  From the Second Avenue line, take the Q to Atlantic Avenue, and transfer to the 2 or 3. This requires a longer and more complicated walk through the Atlantic Avenue station, but it's well marked.  These directions will be repeated in the reminder emails closer to the date.
