Whitney Museum -- Henry Taylor Exhibit
Henry Taylor at the Whitney Museum
December 4, 2023
For over three decades, Los Angeles artist Henry Taylor (b. 1958) has captured the essence of people from diverse backgrounds - family, friends, neighbors, celebrities, politicians, and strangers - with a blend of raw immediacy and tenderness.
The exhibition's title, "Henry Taylor: B Side," hints at his improvisational art-making style, akin to lesser-known, experimental songs on a record's flip side. Taylor's paintings, created swiftly from memory, clippings, snapshots, and sittings, range from light-hearted to somber. They blend bold, sensuous colors, rich details, and loose brushwork, creating vibrant, living artworks. Grounded in empathy, his work delves into human experiences, particularly those of his community. The exhibit will include over 130 works of art in this 30-year retrospective.
