Unnamed Figures: Black Presence and Absence in the Early American North

American Folk Art Museum Tour: Unnamed Figures

Please join Rachel Strauber, a CHV member and Docent at the American Folk Art Museum, for a tour of “Unnamed Figures: Black Presence and Absence in the Early American North” on January 24 at 10:30. The objects chosen for this exhibit are intended to show the complicated relationships between race and slavery in the North and the development of the dominant white identity in this region that left little room for the Black presence. These objects do so both in their depictions of Black people and in the failure even to acknowledge their presence. The visitor to this exhibit is asked to think about what and who might be left out of the story.

In addition, the exhibit provides concrete evidence of a Black presence through the works of Black artists, the needlework of Black schoolgirls, and the photographs Black people had made of themselves. For a preview of the exhibit, see the NYT article, click here.
