Tour of Fashion in Art at The Metropolitan Museum of Art

Please join us for a tour at The Metropolitan Museum of Art, entitled Fashion in Art on Tuesday, March 26, 2024, at 3 PM.  The Fashion in Art tour will look at fashions from Ancient Greece to modern times, in different areas of the world. Fashion can tell us a great deal more than just the gender, age and socio-economic condition of the sitter. We will learn what fashion can tell us about the culture, current events, politics as well as scientific and mechanical inventions of the time.  And we will see that the fashions of the day were not just in clothing, but also fashions in accessories, hair styles (both for men and women), interior design and even the breed of your dog.  With all this to learn, this tour will be of interest to everyone, men and women.

The tour will be led by Ruth Henderson, a docent in the Met’s Costume Institute.  Ruth’s career in the fashion world included being a buyer of Better Sportswear for Lord and Taylor, the Fashion Director for a group of specialty stores, and the designer for a women’s knitwear company. It was during these years that she traveled extensively, frequented museums around the world, and began her lifelong love of art. Ruth’s role as a docent in the Met’s Costume Institute, giving tours of both the special exhibits and a tour called Fashion in Art, has allowed her to combine her two loves- fashion and art.
