Tour of "Ben Shahn, On Nonconformity" at the Jewish Museum
Ben Shahn, an American artist renowned for his social realism and left wing political views, showed how art could be a powerful tool for social commentary and activism. He rejected abstraction, adopting an expressive graphic style influenced by photography, and a strong and clear point of view. In his later years, Shahn (an immigrant from Latvia) turned to Jewish imagery, the Hebrew language, and biblical stories. This is the first major U.S. survey of Shahn's work since 1976. In its review, the New York Times (press here to see review) called the show “gripping” and “revelatory”, and says it feels "utterly relevant for the troubled moment we are living in now."
