Tour of Monet and Venice at The Brooklyn Museum

Joan Cummins, Curator of Asian Art at The Brooklyn Museum, will provide a guided tour of Monet and Venice at the Brooklyn Museum.

This beautiful installation at the Brooklyn Museum is the first exhibition to focus on Claude Monet’s paintings of Venice since the paintings debuted in Paris in 1912. The exhibition places Monet’s two-month stay in Venice within the context of his long career and examines the city as a destination for artists and romantics. Nineteen of the artist’s Venice compositions, along with many more of his paintings of water, join works by other artists – including Canaletto, Turner, Sargent, and Signac – who depicted the fabled city.  The show includes a video installation capturing impressions of Venice, and a new symphonic composition by the Museum’s composer in residence, Niles Luther. Brooklyn’s Curator of Asian Art, Joan Cummins, will lead us on a tour of this exciting and evocative show.

The tour will be on December 11 at 11:30 AM.  We have room for 20 people on the tour and if you wish to attend, please click on the green REGISTER button below to register with CHV.  You must buy tickets to the museum on your own.  The Monet exhibit has a special admission price, and tickets must be purchased in advance.  You must purchase tickets for the Monet exhibit (which provides access to the entire museum) because the general museum admission ticket does not provide access to the Monet exhibit.  We urge you to buy your tickets to the exhibit right away as there is a limited number of admissions at the 11:30 AM time slot.  To purchase tickets, click here.  You must select December 11 from the drop-down menu near the top of the page.  Then be sure to purchase tickets for the 11:30 AM entrance to the exhibit.  Note that there is a special price for seniors (65+) listed under "Select Ticket Type".  We will meet in the museum lobby at 11:15 AM.

The Brooklyn Museum has placed unusually rigorous restrictions on what visitors can bring into the exhibition space: no bags larger than 8 x 11 inches, no umbrellas, and no water bottles allowed. Little plastic bags are available from the coat check for people to use for necessary items if their bags are too big, but it will be easiest if people bring their smallest purses or bags.

Directions to the Museum: The easiest way to reach the museum is by subway: it is located at the Eastern Parkway / Brooklyn Museum station on the 2 and 3 subway line.  From Carnegie Hill the trip will take at least 45 minutes, but Joan recommends budgeting an hour.  From the Lexington Avenue line take the 4 or 5 to Nevins Street in Brooklyn, and just walk across the platform to get the 2 or 3.  These directions will be repeated in the reminder emails closer to the date.
