Tour of The Studio Museum of Harlem
The Studio Museum of Harlem was founded in 1968 as a nexus for artists of African descent locally, nationally and internationally. The museum’s studio program began in 1967 and continuing today provides support for the creation of new works with priority given to artists who use nontraditional materials and for young people seeking to develop careers in art. The museum moved to its permanent location at 144 West 125th Street in the early 1980’s under the direction of scholar and curator Mary Schmidt Campell. The new location allowed the Museum to accommodate expanded exhibitions, programming and storage. Thelma Golden became the director in 2005 as the museum continued to advance the work of contemporary artists. In 2018 reflecting the need of the growing museum collection and the expanding needs of the surrounding community, the museum began its work on a new museum at its present site. The present museum opened at the same site in 2025. Offering expanded space for the permanent collection as well as the continuing artist in residence program, it reflects the vibrant national and international community of artists that the museum has supported.
A tour of the museum will take place on Wednesday, April 8 at 11:00 AM. The museum is located at 144 West 125th Street. The cost of the tour including admission is $15.00, which according to CHV policy must be arranged at the time of registration. The tour is limited to 15 members.
