Tour of Keith Haring Exhibit at The Brant Foundation
The Brant Foundation, founded by collector Peter Brant in 1996, is dedicated to promoting education and appreciation of contemporary art. The foundation has two locations, Greenwich, CT opened in 1996 and New York City in 2013. The New York City location is an outpost of Peter Brant’s personal museum housed in an old Con Edison substation on East 6th Street that Brant purchased a decade ago. An exhibition of Keith Haring’s work from 1980- 1984 is being exhibited at the Brant Foundation’s New York location.
Keith Haring was born in Pennsylvania and came to New York in 1978, immersing himself in the downtown art scene where he began developing the subway drawings that made him famous. His simple lines, along with his ability to capture movement and subversive energy while breaking traditional art boundaries pole vaulted him to fame. His pop-inspired work while playful and attractive, addressed social issues ranging from AIDS to the drug crisis, making his work both visually dynamic and socially engaged while crafting one of the most recognizable artistic styles with iconic symbols, themes and motifs. His inspiration garnered from everyday life and current issues brought attention and awareness to the challenges and problems of the time. An exhibition of Haring’s work at the Brant museum New York celebrates Keith Haring and the legacy of artists who defined New York’s downtown scene of the 1980’s reaffirming a dedication to preserving the history of this pivotal cultural era.
