Tour of "Untitled" (America) at The Whitney Museum of American Art - Cancelled
Drawn from the extensive Whitney’s permanent collection, “Untitled” America looks at artwork from 1900 to 1980, a pivotal period in American art history. With this installation the museum celebrates its 10th anniversary of moving downtown from its previous home in the Breuer building. Installed with an open space concept taking advantage of the east and west windows of the 7th floor of the museum, the artwork takes on a different opportunity for looking. The visitor is greeted by a broad range of works across decades rather than a structured installation of chronology, with some Whitney classics as well as work that may be new but also iconic.
From the early collecting by Gertrude Vanderbilt Whitney, a pioneer of American art this installation traces art and artists that shaped American culture through innovation and creativity. “Untitled” America captures a question mark about the idea of what American art is and how artists played with this idea to create art that reflected society through different genres, representation, abstraction, figuration and landscape.
