Gilded Figures: A Tour of The Hispanic Society Museum

A tour of the Hispanic Society Museum exhibition of Gilded Figures: Wood and Clay Made Flesh, led by art historian, William Ambler.

The Hispanic Society Museum and Library recently re-opened with a show of historical sculptures from Spain and the Spanish-speaking Americas at its Washington Heights home, 613 West 155th Street.  This exhibit, Gilded Figures: Wood and Clay Made Flesh, consists of some two dozen religious works — seven by women — dating from the 15th through 18th centuries, all brilliantly colored and all but one from the Society’s holdings.  This exhibit received a rave review in The New York Times on October 21, which can be read here.

We were fortunate to be able to offer a tour of this exhibit for up to 20 Carnegie Hill Village members on Saturday, December 4 at Noon, by William Ambler.  Mr. Ambler is an educator at The Morgan Library & Museum and at the Cathedral of St. John the Divine.  Previously he has served as a researcher in the Department of European Paintings and as a lecturer and gallery guide at the Metropolitan Museum of Art.  He also taught art history for five years at New York University.  His primary areas of research are Spanish Golden Age painting and the propagandistic qualities of European Baroque art.
