American Folk Arts Museum Tour

Rachel Strauber introduced a CHV group to this current exhibition, chronicling the many businesses that helped New York develop into the colossus it is today.

CHV member and long-time docent at the Museum, Rachel Strauber, introduced 15 CHV members and friends to its current exhibition, Made in New York City: The Business of Folk Art. Through the eyes of local artists, the show chronicles the many businesses that helped New York develop into the colossus it continues to be today.

Contrary to popular belief, folk art was not the exclusive province of rural America in the 19th century. The objects on display demonstrate that New York City was blessed with highly talented, self-taught artists who painted the portraits and landscapes that graced the walls of ordinary folk. They also made the charmingly decorated chairs in which they sat, and carved the bold figures that stood outside the shops they patronized, as well as the flamboyant carousel animals that provided them amusement.
